Everyone was leaving the city in favor of the suburbs. We were living in Artesia, my uncle Tim and his family had moved to Pico Rivera and Bob's mother Cora and her husband Bill were building a new home in Coachella, located in the desert about 25 miles east of Palm Springs. We drove out to look at the property. It was a corner lot, there were a few houses in the neighborhood and a grammar school across the street. Bill was a building contractor and he was building the house himself. There were homes being built all around the neighborhood and at that time people thought the Coachella and Indio area were going to grow and become the heart of the Coachella Valley. I loved the desert, warm and dry. At some point Cora made taco's and I ate my first taco. I fell in love with them, taco's would be a favorite food forever.
