I had been having problems with irregular and heavy periods, and after being very late for my period, I decided I'd better go to the doctor and have things checked out. I was eighteen by now, and no longer able to go to the military doctors because I had become too old to be considered a dependent.
I was nearly two month late for my period when I arrived at the doctors office. I knew I wasn't pregnant because I wasn't having sex. I didn't think anything serious was wrong, but I wanted to find out why my body was behaving poorly.
After sitting in the waiting room, a nurse escorted me into an office where I was to meet with the doctor. This was a doctor I did not know, I had been referred to him by a friend, but this was the first time we'd met. I went into the office, and the doctor entered and introduced himself. He was a middle aged man, with light brown hair and fairly nice looking. Like most men in the early 1960s, he smelled strongly of Old Spice Aftershave Lotion.
I explained why I was there to the doctor and he stared at me while I explained my symptoms.
"Are you sure you're not pregnant?", he asked me.
"I"m sure", I replied.
He looked at me, appearing rather disgusted with me and my situation.
"You young girls are all the same", he began. "You get pregnant, try to deny the fact that you are pregnant, and come to me because your parents don't know me and you're hoping they won't learn of your pregnancy from me. Well, I'm not going to help you, so you can just leave, young lady. And please don't come back"!
The doctor turned on his heels and marched out of the office after giving me a look of disdain. I was stunned. I sat there momentarily not knowing what to do. Finally, I gathered myself together and left the office, very embarrassed. It would be my last visit to a doctor for quite some time.
I was not pregnant, I had not had sex for over a year. My period came about a week after this incident.
