As it came closer to the time we had to leave, I continued to cry. I walked around with Kleenex in my pockets just in case the tears came again. Everyone else in our family was handling the move fairly well, I was the only drama queen.
A few weeks before we were to leave, Bob went out and bought a new 1959 Ford station wagon. It was blue and white and large enough to hold our large family. We all piled in for a test ride and were surprised to find out how roomy it was.
We also had a new parakeet that was going to travel with us. The parakeet that my grandmother had kept for us while we were in Hawaii had died. My mother went out a short time later and purchased another parakeet. He was a beautiful turquoise blue and we named him Goofus.
The movers came to pack us up and I cried as I said goodbye to all of my friends. On the afternoon of March 19, 1959, we left to travel east to Tennessee. Our first stop would be the desert to visit our grandparents.
