Technically, my volunteer position as a recreation leader on the Naval Air Base in Hawaii was my first job. I hadn't expected to be paid, but I received a check in the mail after we returned to the mainland. Now I was about to start what I considered my real first job.
I had been hired as a sales clerk at the Anaheim Broadway Department Store. I began my new job the day after Thanksgiving in 1958. I began as a sales clerk in the candy department. In those days, department store's had counters filled with fresh candy, similar to what you might find in a professional candy store. There was every kind of chocolate one could imagine. The supervisor told me I could eat as much candy as I wanted as long as no customers saw me doing so. So I began the chocolate tasting. Whenever I had no customers, I'd try a new piece of chocolate. The candy section was usually slow so I was eating a lot of chocolate. I learned which candies I really liked, and one of my favorite's was Almond Rocca. Almond Rocca is chopped almonds with toffee, covered in chocolate.
One day I worked in the toy department. The toy department was so busy my day went very fast. I sold all kinds of toys: stuffed animals, sports equipment, board games, dolls and toy trucks.
The toy department was only a temporary stop though, and I was soon back in the candy department, stuffing my face and gaining pounds. Fortunately, it was only a temporary job, so I didn't gain too much weight.
