I spent the summer of 1958 volunteering at the base recreation center. I taught recreation activities to 2nd and RD grade kids. I had agreed to be a volunteer recreation leader for the summer and found that I really enjoyed working with the kids.
Two weeks before we were scheduled to leave Hawaii we moved into the Transit Housing. The movers had come in and packed everything to be shipped back to California. We packed up our traveling clothes and settled into the apartment provided us by Transit Housing.
The church choir had a "goodbye" party for me. I was busy saying good-bye to everyone. I hated the good-byes; they made me too sad. I hated the good-byes so much that I never did say good-bye to my friend Yvonne. I just couldn't bring myself to to face another emotional good-bye and I left without even contacting her. This led to years of regret.
I invited several friends to go to the ship and see me off when we departed. Fred was also invited and he said he would come. My excitement grew as I prepared to leave the island. I knew my life would be changing once again.
