Once we got over the reunion with our grandparents, life in the desert became rather boring. It was so hot we were unable to go outside until evening, and even then it was still very hot. So we watched television game shows during the day. My grandmother took us swimming in the early evening which was fun and helped us cool off.
When we left to go to Hawaii we had a parakeet. We had left the pet bird in my grandmother's care because we could not take it with us. When we returned, we all realized that the bird my grandmother was trying to pass off as our pet was actually a different bird. No one said anything to my grandmother, but we all whispered among ourselves about the bird not being ours. My mother quietly accepted the bird, and we took him home with us later, when we were finally settled in our house.
