While living in Hawaii, I had a Jewish girl friend. Through this girl, I learned a certain Jewish swear word and began to replace the English word I normally used (and got into trouble for using) with this particular word. I used this word multiple times each day, and was thrilled to discover that no one in my family knew I was saying an off color word. The more I used the word, the easier it came out of my mouth, with no one realizing what I was saying.
Unfortunately for me, that all came to an end while we stayed with my grandparents in the desert. My grandmother had a lady friend visit her while we were staying with her. My grandmother and this lady were drinking tea and conversing when I went through the room. I was frustrated with something, I'm not quite sure what it was. I loudly exclaimed my private swear word, then went into another room, oblivious to my grandmother and her guest.
Once my grandmother's friend left, my mother came into the room very angry. It seems my grandmother's friend was Jewish, and understood exactly what I was saying. She told my grandmother and my grandmother told my mother. I had been busted, and my grandmother was very embarrassed and felt that I had insulted her friend. My secret word was a secret word no longer.
I was in big trouble and was put to work and ordered to "think about my rude behavior" as I did these extra chores. It was the end of my secret word.
