It was late by the time we disembarked from the S.S. Leilani and passed through customs (Hawaii was not yet a state). We had to wait until late afternoon for our car to be hoisted from the ship and by that time it was late in the day. We found a motel and stayed overnight in San Francisco.
The next day we began our drive home. It was summer so the weather was warm with blue skies. I was so excited about being home, I was inhaling the sights and sounds as we drove south.
We stopped in a small cafe for lunch as we traveled. There was a small juke box in our booth, as was common in the 1950's. Someone had dropped some coins into the juke box but hadn't selected or played any of the songs, so I was very excited that I was going to be able to select and play some music for free. I started to push buttons but my mother gave me a dirty look and a warning not to touch any of the buttons. She had a headache and didn't want to listen to music, especially my type of music. I sulked.
Once we arrived home, we found out the people who were renting our house had not yet vacated it. They were buying the house next door and it was in escrow. My parents agreed to let them stay in our home until escrow closed. And they announced that we would go on vacation.
