There was a drama club on the base and when word went out that they were going to do the play My Three Angels, my girl friend Rusty auditioned for the part of the teenage daughter. Rusty was a striking girl, about 5 feet 7 inches, with natural red hair. Rusty easily won the part, and called me asking me to come down and work on the play.
So I went down and began asking what I could do to help put on the play. I was told they needed a make-up artist. I am fairly artistic, but I had never put any makeup on with the exception of lipstick on myself. Fortunately, there was a regular make-up artist who served as my mentor.
So several nights a week, Rusty and I would head to the theater where rehearsals were taking place. Rusty rehearsed her lines and I practiced make-up application. I learned a lot, my mentor knew what he was doing. I became very comfortable in all aspects of make-up application, and even learned a little about hair styling.
The play was a huge success and sold out both nights it was performed. The money earned went to a navy charity. I was a successful make-up artist and my friend Rusty became very popular and a local "star".
