I loved going to the movies, and it didn't take me long to discover the movie theater located on the base. It was slightly different than most theaters. It was an outdoor theater, there were no walls and no roof. The weather in Hawaii stayed fairly static and other than a rain shower, you could count on a warm night. It was easy to be comfortable in the outdoor theater year around since it was usually in the mid-80s.
Bob loved science fiction, monster movies, westerns and war movies and my Mom wouldn't go with him, so frequently, I would tag along with him and we'd go and see the latest flick. I especially liked the science fiction and monster movies. Since it only cost a dime to get into the movies, we went often and saw every monster and science fiction movie. Most of them were downright terrible, but they were usually so bad they were funny. Our favorite was a terrible movie with a rubber chicken that flew around (with strings quite visible as it was supposed to be flying) attacking the world. When Bob didn't go, I went with my brother Lee, or with a friend. I saw all the "B" movies and many of the better "A-list" movies.
Oklahoma came to the outdoor theater shortly after we arrived in Hawaii. My Mother wanted to go see it and asked me to stay home and babysit my younger siblings. I selfishly threw a fit, I wanted to go to see Oklahoma with one of my friends that night. My Mother gave in and didn't go. I went and enjoyed the movie, but felt guilty for doing so. The guilt grew every time I thought about that night.
