Once we were at sea, my brother Lee and I explored the ship. It didn't take me long to find my way around. The bar was a very busy area and that was where I could buy a Coca Cola so I hung out there for a short time. It was there I met the ship's photographer. He was young, probably about nineteen or twenty. I was almost fifteen at this time and was definitely becoming more mature.
The mornings were the best time to talk to Phil, the ship's photographer. Morning's were his slow time because people were still sleeping and not prepared to be photographed. So I got into the habit of going to the ship's bar first thing in the morning, having a coke and talking to Phil.
Phil and I were not romantic, just friends. I was not legally old enough to date an older guy and that may have been a factor in keeping our relationship casual. Besides, I was still quite innocent at that time. We would just talk and joke around. Phil liked to photograph me, and took quite a few pictures. Phil told me I could have been a model if I wasn't so short (5'2"). It may have been flattery, but I enjoyed hearing it.
My friendship with Phil lasted through the cruise and then ended. Some of the pictures he took of me turned out really good, but I didn't buy any of them, primarily because of the prices. I preferred spending my money on Coca Cola.
