That summer I turned fourteen years old. One of the new popular activities for kids my age was going to the roller rink. Most of the kids went one evening a week and we would rent roller skates and skate around on the hardwood floors while an organist played background music. I became a fairly good skater, skating quickly and I was able to do a few tricks. We had roller skates at home, of course, but they were the metal roller skates that had ball bearings and required a large metal key to fasten the skate onto your shoes. Skating on the sidewalks was often jerky and it was common to trip on debris on the sidewalks. Metal roller skates just didn't have the smooth easy motion that the rink skates had. The ability to move easily on the skates made the roller rinks very popular.
Skating was a lot of fun and there were boys there, so I became a fan. One of my newer friends had a younger brother. He became my first "date". My friend went with a boy and her younger brother tagged along to be with me. We skated, then went to the local hamburger stand for a burger and fries and then our parents took us home. We never got around to a kiss, I don't think either of us were interested at that time.
