I had missed the end of the school year and was going to be starting high school in September, so I decided to attend summer school. I was only taking one subject: algebra. I wanted to be ready for the high school version and thought I better prepare with a summer school class. I only attended school in the mornings and I did well in the class, ending with an A.
There was lots of fun that summer, trips to the beach, Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland. Knott's Berry Farm was one of our favorite weekend trips primarily because there was no fee to go there. If you didn't buy any food it was a free day. Disneyland charged an admission price and then once you entered the park you had to buy a book of tickets to go on the rides. The tickets ranged from an "A" ticket, which would get you a ride on the merry-go-round or the Main street trolley, to an "E" ticket, the prize every kid wanted. An "E" ticket gave you the opportunity to go on the Cadillac of rides, all of the best rides in the park.
When we went to the beach with family, we always went to Huntington Beach, a state beach. My Mother liked it because it was clean and there was great surf. As a California kid, we learned to swim in the ocean. We learned from my Mother what to do if we became caught up in a rip tide, how to dive under large waves and to ride the waves body surfing. I loved swimming in the ocean and became very good at it.
