We had several pets throughout the years. When we lived in Artesia, we had a collie, Beans, who ran away to another family every few days. Bob would go and bring him home, and he would run back over to the other family.
Then there was Popeye, a gray cat that had wandered into our yard in Artesia. Bob had nursed the cat's swollen and infected eye back to normal, and we had named him Popeye, in honor of the cartoon character. Popeye was a sweet, friendly cat, but wandered into the street one day and was hit by a car. Bob buried him in our yard and we had a memorial service.
Parakeet's were the new trend and had become very popular pets. You would see the birds for sale in many stores, including Woolworth's. One day we were shopping in Woolworth's when my friend Patty and I spotted the parakeet cages. We squealed in delight and made sure my Mom noticed them too. My Mom not only noticed the birds, she fell in love with one. He was a pale blue. The saleslady told us he was a boy, she could tell by the area above his beak. My Mother bought a cage and the pale blue bird. We took him home and named him Beanie, after Beanie and Cecil. We had a pet.
