My career in babysitting continued and I was hired by my sister's Brownie Troop leader to babysit once a week while she and her husband went square dancing. The family lived several blocks from us, and had three kids, two boys and a girl. I found out later that I was hired because no one else would take care of the little darlings. Their reputation was horrendous and I soon found that out for myself.
The Brown family had a very small house compared to where we lived. The kitchen was a galley kitchen about three feet wide and six feet long. Only one person could fit in the kitchen at once. Usually when I arrived at the Brown home, Mrs. Brown would have dinner on the stove and I would only have to serve the kids the food. After that, I was to have them watch TV for a short time and then see to it that they went to bed. It all sounded so easy, until I arrived.
The first night I babysat for the Browns, the kids got into a big fight and the youngest son chased the oldest child, the daughter, with a knife. While I was trying to break up that fight, the middle boy went into the kitchen and managed to set the kitchen curtains on fire. I managed to stop the fight, grab the knife and spray the curtain fire with water to put out the fire. By the time the little darlings went to bed, I was exhausted and began looking through the Brown's books and magazine's for something to read. Not only did I find a stack of True Romances, a magazine of women's romance stories, I also found several graphic sex manuals. I decided right then that the little monsters were not too much trouble since the family had above average reading material. Plus, Mrs. Brown paid double since no one else would take the job.
I continued babysitting, earning excellent money and getting an above average sex education from all of that great reading material. Over time, I gained some control over the little darlings and their behavior improved. It all came to a screeching halt, though, when a scandal hit the Brown's. It seems Mrs. Brown had been stealing the Brownie Troop dues money and using those funds to pay me while she and Mr. Brown went out dancing. The scandal was big enough to make the local newspaper, without mentioning where the money had been spent. After that, the Brown's could no longer afford to go out, and I was out of a job.
