I spent the summer of 1955 having fun. My friend Darla and I decided to take baton lessons, so we could become majorettes. So we practiced daily and became very good by the end of the summer.
My friends Darla, Patty and I also spent a lot of time at the movies, swimming, playing card games and board games. I loved going to the movies, and managed to go at least once a week. My favorite movie that summer was Daddy Long Legs, with Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. Darla and I both were Fred Astaire fans and went out of our way to see his movies.
Probably, the biggest thing to happen that summer though, was over in Anaheim. The orange tree's had been cut down and replaced with a theme park unlike anything we'd ever seen. On July 17, 1955 I watched on television as Walt Disney welcomed celebrities to this wonderful new theme park called Disneyland. It was a hot day and Ronald Reagan introduced Walt Disney to the television audience. It was an exciting event, even though I only saw it on television. I could hardly wait to go to Disneyland.
