On the morning of January 28, 1956 everyone at my school was whispering to one another in the halls. There was only one subject the kids were discussing when they met in between classes and the topic of all of this conversation was a new record that had just been released. The name of the record was Heartbreak Hotel and all the talk was about how the singer, a guy named Elvis Presley, was going to be on television that night.
By the time I reached home I had heard Heartbreak Hotel several times on the radio. I really liked the record and had already decided I was going to buy it.
I went out of my way to watch the Dorsey Brother Stage Show that night. I had to tell my parents how important it was for me to see this show, and fortunately they didn't mind me watching the Dorsey Brothers Stage Show.
I sat in front of the tiny television screen absolutely mesmerized when Elvis performed. Here was this guy doing the dirty boogie on television, He was shaking his head, shoulders and the rest of his body as he sang Shake, Rattle and Roll. In those days, singers just stood in front of the microphone and sang their song, and this guy was wiggling all over the place, like he had ants in his pants. And his music was great, he was very cool.
But the best part was his looks. He had a sexiness I'd never seen before. It was obvious he was going to be a star, and I was in love, again.
