The next morning we arrived in Hilo, on the big island of Hawaii. After the ship docked, we went ashore. Bob and my brother Lee wanted to do some different things than my Mom and sisters wanted to do, so we separated with an agreement to meet at a certain place later in the afternoon.
My Mother, sisters and I went shopping for awhile and then headed to Punalu'u, the Black Sand Beach where we waded through the ocean. The Black Sand Beach was formed by volocano lava flowing to the ocean. The lava actually explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. It is a beautiful sight, coconut tree's, gorgeous blue water and sand that is an iridescent black. We didn't dare take any of the Black Sand, it is forbidden and it is said if one does take the Black Sand, that person will be cursed by the Hawaiian Fire Goddess, Pele, until the Black Sand is returned.
We reluctantly left Punalu'u, the Black Sand Beach, and went to meet Bob and Lee at the prearranged meeting site. They weren't there when we arrived, so we waited. And waited and waited and waited. Finally, we were going to miss the Sultan if we stayed any longer. My Mother hailed a taxi and we returned to the ship just in time. Bob and Lee were there already, waiting for us. We rushed to board the Sultan, my Mother and Bob left us to go argue, and I stood and watched the streamers float through the air as the ship pull away from the dock. Once again, I threw my lei into the ocean and it floated back towards Hilo.
