Once back in school, I became very impressed by the class clown. His name was Walter and every day I would come home from school and run to tell my parents: "Guess what Walter said (or did) today"? It didn't take long for Bob to start teasing me about Walter. "And what did Waaal-ter say today, Ruby?" he would ask, always dragging out Walter's name. Then the "Ruby's got a boyfriend" started, and so I quit talking about Walter for awhile.
The school was having an evening Halloween dance and the girls were supposed to ask the boys. I didn't invite Walter, I thought he was funny and outrageous but the boy I really liked was the boy I thought was the most handsome in the school. I asked him to the dance at recess and I was shocked when he said "yes". I was thrilled.
The dance was in the early evening, at dusk. It was a costume party since it was Halloween. I dressed as Sadie Thompson and my "date" was dressed as a pirate. Walter was there dressed as Superman. The girls and boys didn't really hang out together very much, we were still too young for that. The party was a carnival theme and after meeting with my "date", we went our separate ways. We would meet every so often and then go our separate ways again.
When the party was nearly over I went outside for a few minutes. At the side of the building, peering into one of the windows was Bob and my brother Lee. When they saw me they both immediately went into the "Walter" routine. "Waaal-ter is Superman! We were looking to see if you and Waaal-ter were kissing. Does Superman have a super kiss?" They went on and on and laughed at their own jokes. I went back inside to say goodnight to my date, and then went home, humiliated.
