Sometimes, when my Mother and Bob would go to the commissary or PX, we would stay home and I would watch my brother Lee and my sister Linda. Mom and Bob would take Elaine with them and Lee, Linda and I would stay home and raid the chocolate and brown sugar in the cupboards. My parents would take a ferry to an island where the commissary and PX were located, do the shopping and then return home. We weren't left alone too long and they could do the shopping without taking the entire family.
One day in the winter of 1953 my parents left for the commissary and took Elaine with them. My siblings and I raided the cupboards and played inside the house. After awhile, we realized our parents should have returned home and they hadn't. Soon, we were all sitting in front of the window, looking out and waiting for our parents. As we waited we became more and more worried. We were in a strange country, alone and scared.
After what seemed like hours our parents drove up. We were all so relieved! It turned out that they had missed the ferry to return and had to wait for another ferry. They were just as worried about us as we had been for them. Thankfully, everything was okay.
