The War ended when the Japanese formally surrendered on board the U.S.S. Missouri, September 2, 1945. A week later my Mother gave birth to a son, my younger brother. There were many heroes who returned from the War. My Father's older brother served in the South Pacific as an Underwater Demolition Man. The Underwater Demolition Teams were what would now be called Navy Seals. They were frogmen who would clear the beaches of mines and other debris for landing craft. My Mother's older brother served in the Battle of the Bulge and became a German prisoner of war. When the war was almost over, he escaped the prison camp. A small German town actually surrendered to him just before the Allies entered the town. He received two Purple Hearts. They both returned from the War and life would go on. And my Father returned from Okinawa.
