My new Dad, Bob, was the best thing to happen to me. He and my Mother had been teenage high school sweethearts and had known each other most of their lives. Bob was born in San Diego, the son of a career Navy man and a young woman from Oregon. He was sent to military school as a child and when his parents divorced became the center of a nasty custody battle. His Mother, Cora, would end up running off to Mexico for several years to prevent his Dad from receiving custody.
Bob was in the Navy and was stationed near Long Beach. He was an enlisted man who had joined the service during World War II. Bob was coming out of a difficult marriage when he and my Mother reunited and married. He came into the marriage with patience, love and respect for all of us. I suddenly had a Father who cared about my Mother and our family.
