My Mother was several months pregnant with me when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. Men began lining up to go to war. My father continued his day to day life. A few months after Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Los Angeles took place. On February 23, 1942 a Japanese submarine shelled an oil facility near Santa Barbara, north of Los Angeles. Rumors spread, the word spread of a Japanese attack upon the City of Angels and the public panicked. Panicked citizens rushed for shelter or hid in their homes with the blackout shades drawn. Others rushed outside to find out what was going on. Gunners opened fire on airplanes that weren't there while search lights scanned the sky searching for those planes. Eventually things calmed down, but even the Los Angeles Times reported: "LA Area Raided!".
