In June 1942 my parents had been married for a little more than two years. The War plugged along with a victory at the Battle of Midway providing hope to most Americans. My Mother had been out to lunch with her brother Tim and his wife Avis. Mom had a craving for watermelon which was just coming into season. A watermelon was purchased and Mom gave in to her craving and ate nearly half of the watermelon. Not long after that, she developed a stomache ache. Since she was nearly nine months pregnant, Tim and Avis advised her to go to the hospital, she may be in labor. My Mother scoffed off any idea of labor and claimed she just had a stomache ache from eating too much watermelon. As time went on and the stomache ache turned into full blown labor my Mother could no longer deny the fact; I was on the way. It was the early days of birth in a hospital and after my birth Mom had to remain lying in bed for several weeks with her stomache wrapped in a girdle type of garment called binding to "keep everything in place". My Father finally showed up after my birth. His objective: to seduce my Mother's room mate without being caught by my Mother. Years later, he would brag that he was successful.
