My Father finally saw conflict at the end of World War II when he participated in the Battle of Okinawa. The Battle of Okinawa occurred late in the war and was supposed to prepare a starting point for the final invasion of Japan. The Battle took place between March and June of 1945. The bombing of Hiroshima made the invasion of Japan unnecessary and the war ended a few months after the Battle of Okinawa. In his later years he would continue to brag about how he escaped most of the war with his phony injury, but in the same breathe, he would brag about his part in the war and he would drag out his personal photographs of the invasion. He returned home from the war with all of the victorious military men bringing home a Samauri Sword and a Japanese flag as souveniers.
