Living in Southern California for most of my life has had a special bonus; the opportunity to meet celebrities. My most recent encounter with fame came because of my job as a Recreation Therapist at the Stroke Recovery Center in Palm Springs, California. Ms. Leachman was utilizing our stage for rehearsals for a show she is going to do in Riverside and graciously offered to do her dress rehearsal for the Stroke Center clients. Ms. Leachman came to the Stroke Center because her former husband, Director George Englund, is a volunteer and often leads Rap Sessions, a discussion group with stroke survivors. Ms. Leachman came through my office several times as the office is the direct access to the back stage area. I was able to listen to her rehearsals, she talked about her life, sang several songs and played piano. Her choice on the piano was Rhapsody in Blue, which she played beautifully. I later talked briefly with her and mentioned that I had no idea that she played the piano so beautifully. She stated that was what she did before she became an actress. She and her group all had lunch with our clients in our dining room. Ms. Leachman tried desperately to help serve lunch to the stroke clients but the staff wouldn't let her help. She appears to be a lovely lady, down to earth and pleasant at all times. Some of our clients asked for and received autographs and photographs with Ms. Leachman. She performed her show for our clients and was a huge success. She promised to return again, I hope so. She was a treat!
